The Mail Cache will have special hours around the New Year's Holiday. Please check the main home page for updated hours.
Please Note: The Mail Cache is not responsible if a non authorized person using your digital key to pickup your mail. Give out your digital key cautiously and only to people you trust. If you think someone is using your digital key maliciously, please alert us immediately so we may reset and regenerate your code and protect to your account. Box holders may be charged a $5 fee to reset and regenerate a digital key.
As of January 1, 2026, all box holders now have a digital key to access their mailbox.
What is a Digital Key?
The Digital Key is a QR code that can be stored on your smartphone and used to pickup your mail from either the front counter or drive thru.
Customers are not required to use their digital keys, it is just another option available to them.
However, now that box holders have access to both physical and digital keys, we will be more strict when customers come to the counter requesting their mail without a key. The $2 keyless fee will be charged if customers do not have either their physical or digital key to pickup their mail.
How to Use Your Digital Key:
Find your digital key on your phone (see below for a list of ways to store your digital key)
Make sure your screen is bright and not turned down too low.
When Using at the Drive Thru: Hold your phone screen about 2 inches away from the scanner and give your phone a little shake to make sure the scanner reads the key. Make sure the large yellow light to the left of the scanner flashes. This is how you know the key has been scanned and we are on the way with your mail. If you have any troubles, press the “Need Assistance” button to call a staff member over.
At the Front Counter: Present your Digital Key to a staff member at the front counter and they will scan it for you.
Where to Store your Digital Key:
Favorite your Digital Key email in your inbox and access it quickly through your emails.
Save your Digital Key image to a note or photo album on your phone and favorite that note/album to find it quickly.
The primary account holders who have an iPhone will have an option to store their digital key in their Apple Wallet. In the email with your digital key in it (coming in a separate email) look below the QR code and you will see a hyperlink that says “Add to Apple Wallet”. Follow the prompts to add it to your wallet.
*If you need help saving your digital key to your phone, please feel free to come to the front counter with your digital key email and our staff can help figure out what option work best for you.
Do I need to use my digital key?
No. You do not. We do recommend storing it on your phone though. That way, if you forget or misplace your physical key, you can use your digital key to avoid the $2 keyless mail pick up fee.
If I had a QR code for the drive thru in the past, will it change with this roll out?
No. Your original QR code still works. It has just been renamed the "digital key"
Can I give my Digital Key out to someone so they can pickup my mail for me?
Yes. However, make sure they are someone you trust. The Mail Cache is not liable if someone uses your digital key to maliciously pickup your mail. If you are worried someone is using your digital key without your consent or maliciously, contact The Mail Cache immediately.
If I forget my physical key and my digital key, will I be charged to pickup my mail without my key?
Yes. There will be a $2 keyless pickup fee to pickup mail without your physical or digital key. This fee has existed for physical keyless pick ups since January 1, 1999, and now extends to the digital key.
Can I print a picture of my digital key to keep in my wallet?
Yes. The Mail Cache staff can also print it out on a business card for you for a $2 fee. For an additional $5 we can also laminate it for you. However, we highly encourage people to try to use the digital version and move away from the physical cards, as they are easily lost or misplaced.
Why is The Mail Cache offering digital keys?
The digital key, when scanned, creates a record in our system, which can be helpful for tracking mailbox activity. Also, when we scan your digital key, our system alerts us of any packages that are available for pick up, as well as if the mailbox is coming due or has gone overdue.
Will I be charged to use the digital key at the drive thru?
No. The drive thru is now included in The Mail Cache mailbox service.
I think someone may have obtained my digital key without my authorization and is using it to access my mailbox. What should I do?
Immediately notify The Mail Cache (preferable by emailing sales@mailcache.com) so that we may resent and regenerate your digital key. That will make your old QR code invalid so anyone trying to use it will be blocked. However, there could be a $5 fee to reset and regenerate your key if the customer requests this service excessively.
How do I get my digital key?
Your digital key will be emailed to you, either on January 1, 2026 or when you open your mailbox. The email should be entitled “Your Digital Key from The Mail Cache”.
Why do only the primary box holders have access to the apple wallet feature?
At this time, we are limited to offering apple wallet access to only the person on account listed as the primary box holder. We hope in the future that we will be able to expand the apple wallet feature to everyone.
If I am not the primary box holder, can I save the digital key to my apple wallet?
Yes, however it would requires having the primary account holder send their email with the link to the "Add to Apple Wallet".
Can I save my Digital Key to my google wallet?
At this time, we do not have the ability to link google wallet directly to The Mail Cache digital keys. We hope to offer this feature in the future. There are, supposedly, ways to add QR code photos to a google wallet, but that would be the responsibility of the customer to do that themselves.
